Description
A hungry black cat, eight levels of traps, and a house full of food waiting at the end of each one. Jake Black Cat 2 is a compact 2D platformer that builds on the original game with the same simple promise: get Jake home in one piece, and grab every bowl of cat food along the way.
Controls are as classic as the genre gets. You move Jake with either the WASD keys or the arrow keys, and pressing W or the Up arrow twice in quick succession triggers a double jump, which is essential for crossing wide gaps and reaching food bowls tucked away on high ledges. Each level ends when you guide Jake to his cat house, but the path there is guarded by enemy cats patrolling the ground, flying robot cats sweeping through the air, and spikes and saws placed exactly where an unwary landing will hurt.
The eight levels ramp up steadily. Early stages introduce one hazard at a time so you can learn the jump timing, but later ones layer them together, forcing you to bounce over a saw, duck under a robot cat, and stick the landing on a narrow platform all in one motion. Collecting the food bowls is technically optional for finishing a level, but completionists will find that the bowls are deliberately placed in risky spots, turning a simple run into a route-planning puzzle.
A few tips will save you some lives. Learn the double jump height early, because many spikes are spaced to punish a single jump but reward a well-timed double. Watch enemy patterns before moving; both the walking cats and the flying robots follow fixed paths, and patience beats speed almost every time. If a food bowl looks dangerous to reach, plan the escape route before you commit, since grabbing it is pointless if the return jump lands you on a saw.
Fans of old-school platformers will feel right at home here, and the short level structure makes it great for quick sessions. It is a small game, but a well-tuned one.
